Orihuela Costa, 19th of July 2009

The Town Hall of Orihuela is pleased to announce that this year, as part of the cultural summer program, a Spanish folk festival will be held in Orihuela Costa. This festival will feature a variety of different dances, songs, music and costumes from the different Spanish regions of Valencia, Murcia and the Balearic Islands.

Orihuela Costa can look forward to the following groups:

The folkdance group "Nuestra Señora de Belen" comes from La Aparecida, a suburb of Orihuela. This well known and popular group was formed in 1979 and has now made many performances at home and abroad.

Next, the folkdance group "La Virgen del Carmen" hail from the village of Beniaján in Murcia, in the area of Huetana Peña "El Azahar". This well renowned and respected group was first established in 1979 with the object of reviving the traditional dancing of Murcia and spreading it. This dance group has also paid particular attention to the history of costume in the 18th and 19th century Murcia and have made their costumes according to proper historical accuracy. These can be admired in their performances. The folk group has a wide repertoire of music combined with different dances such as the "Malagueñas" (a traditional southern Spanish dance) "Parrandas" (a typical Murcian dance) and "Fandangos" (an old Spanish dance).

Finally, folkdance group "Sa Colla Sant Rafael" comes all the way from Ibiza.
Sa Colla Sant Rafael was founded on 8 December 1981 in the village of San Rafael on the island of Ibiza. From the time of their founding and first contact with the roots and traditional culture of Ibiza, they have developed into an internationally renowned folk group and have participated in many national and international festivals.

On 25 July 2009 at 22:00 pm, you will have a unique opportunity to enjoy one of the diverse and rich aspects of traditional Spanish culture, not just from one region but from three. The festival takes place in a unique environment, directly looking onto the Mediterranean Sea, at the new promenade in Playa Flamenca. Admission is free but please be aware that as there are only limited seats available, early attendance is recommended.
